The Seven Churches

It is possible to look spiritually healthy on the outside while something is quietly dying on the inside. That is true of churches, and it is equally true of individuals. In Revelation 2 and 3, Jesus addresses seven real churches with striking clarity, commending what is genuine, confronting what is wrong, and calling each church to respond. Two churches receive no rebuke. One receives no commendation. One has a reputation for being alive while Jesus declares it dead. Seven different churches, seven different conditions, and one risen and authoritative Christ who sees what no one else can see.

Jesus identifies four dangers that threaten the health of His church across every generation. The first is compromise, the slow blending of Christian identity with the values and practices of the surrounding culture. The second is lovelessness, the ability to hold correct doctrine while losing genuine love for Christ and for people. The third is spiritual deadness, maintaining the appearance of life while the inner reality has grown cold and hollow. The fourth is self-sufficiency, the dangerous belief that we have everything we need and no longer depend on Christ. Each of these dangers is subtle, and each one is capable of going undetected for a long time.

Yet Jesus does not expose these things to destroy His church. He exposes them to heal it. Every warning in these letters is ultimately a call back to fellowship and faithfulness with Him. He stands at the door and knocks, not as a stranger, but as the One who belongs at the center of His people's lives. Every letter ends with a promise to those who conquer, who persevere, repent when they fall, and hold fast when faithfulness becomes costly. Faithful endurance in the present is shaped by confidence in Christ now and in the future.
