Look to Christ

Series: The Revelation of Jesus Christ Scripture: Revelation 1:9–20

When life becomes difficult, whatever is causing the pain tends to fill our entire field of vision. Revelation 1:9-20 offers a corrective to that narrowing. Written by the apostle John from exile on the island of Patmos, this passage is not a puzzle to decode or a timeline to map. It is a vision of Jesus Christ in His full, risen glory, given to a man who was suffering, for people who were suffering. John describes himself as a partner in tribulation, in the kingdom, and in patient endurance, all of which are found in Jesus. Even in hardship, believers are not outside of Christ. They are in Him, and that union does not dissolve when circumstances get hard.

The vision John receives is striking in its imagery. He sees one like a son of man, a title drawn directly from Daniel 7 and used by Jesus throughout the Gospels, standing among seven golden lampstands that represent the churches. The glorified Christ is not distant. He is present among His people. His appearance communicates priestly authority, eternal wisdom, penetrating knowledge, and sovereign power. When John falls at His feet as though dead, Jesus reaches down, touches him, and speaks words of comfort and command: fear not, for He is the first and the last, the living one who died and is now alive forevermore, holding the keys of death and Hades. The glory that overwhelms John is the same glory that lifts him back up.

The deeper invitation of this passage is to examine what occupies our vision when life gets hard. It may not be something obviously sinful. It can be financial security, the future we have planned, the success of our children, or even the need to always be right. Whatever we ultimately look to for safety, meaning, and significance is what we worship. Revelation calls us not simply to put those things down, but to look to Christ, because His presence sustains us, His glory calls us to genuine worship, and His power gives us the confidence to endure. Do not let circumstances determine what you believe about Jesus. Let what you know about Jesus determine how you face your circumstances.
