Can These Bones Live?

Series: LSC Foundations Scripture: Ezekiel 37:1–28

Ezekiel 37 places us in a valley full of dry bones, a vision given to a prophet living in exile among a people who had lost their temple, their land, and their hope. Into that hopeless setting, God asks a question that sounds almost absurd: can these bones live? It is a question that cuts to the heart of how we think about God when everything around us looks finished. Most of us, if we are honest, tend to measure what God can do by what our circumstances look like. When life is going well, faith feels easy. When things fall apart, we quietly begin to assume that what is impossible for us must also be impossible for God.

What unfolds in this vision is a picture of God doing what only God can do. He speaks first, and the bones begin to rattle and come together. Flesh and skin cover them. But there is still no breath, and Ezekiel notices. It is a crucial moment, because it shows that external change is not the same as spiritual life. You can assemble something that looks alive and still have a dead body. So God tells Ezekiel to prophesy to the breath itself, and when the breath comes, the valley fills with an exceedingly great army. The same God who connects bone to bone also brings divided people together, and through Jesus Christ, that promise extends to every tribe, nation, and language.

The resurrection of Jesus is the ultimate answer to the question God asked in the valley. On Friday, the disciples had no hope. On Saturday, the tomb was sealed. But Sunday came, and God demonstrated once and for all that dead things can live when He speaks. Because Jesus rose, there is hope for dry souls, broken families, divided churches, and people who feel cut off and finished. The bones did not make themselves alive. They did not become worthy first. And neither do we. We need the same thing those bones needed: the breath of God. That is exactly what Jesus died and rose to offer.
