Tales from the Other Side
Preacher: Gary Bulley Series: LSC Foundations Scripture: Romans 15:18–23
The greatest threat to the church has never been persecution. It has been apathy. History shows that some of the most powerful movements in Christian history emerged during seasons of intense opposition, and the early church is the clearest example. When Jesus began His ministry, the Roman Empire was entirely pagan. Christians were imprisoned, tortured, and killed for refusing to worship Caesar. And yet, within 300 years, they had spiritually conquered that same empire. The church does not just survive in hard times. It thrives.
Drawing from Romans 15, four markers define a church that is genuinely working. First, it produces disciples, not just converts. People who are actively putting off the old self and putting on the character of Christ, shaped to love and serve even at great personal cost. Second, the Holy Spirit is visibly at work. There is no greater miracle than a changed life, and when the Spirit is truly moving, it is felt the moment you walk through the door. Third, leaders are being raised up, people who take initiative rather than waiting to be told, following the prompting of the Spirit and bringing the Kingdom of God into their communities. Fourth, the mission extends beyond existing walls to reach people and places where Christ is not yet known.
This progression is sequential and cannot be shortcut. Discipleship comes first. When people are genuinely being shaped by Jesus, God moves. When God moves, excitement and faith follow. When faith is alive, leaders emerge. When leaders emerge, the gospel spreads in ways no single church or pastor could accomplish alone. The church that shakes the world is not the one with the best programs or the largest building. It is the one filled with people who have allowed Jesus to live in and through them, and who take the initiative to carry His Kingdom into the world around them.
