Precious Stones
Preacher: Rob Peters Series: LSC Foundations Scripture: 1 Peter 2:4–5
Discipleship is a word that gets used often in Christian circles, but defining it clearly is harder than it sounds. It is surprisingly easy to attach our faith to other things, whether political movements, family values, ministry programs, or even good causes, while quietly losing sight of what it actually means to follow Jesus. First Peter chapter two cuts through the noise with six distinct images that together paint a full and compelling picture of what a disciple looks like.
The six images are a growing baby, a living stone, a priest with special access to God, a chosen person who represents God, an alien who has a place to belong, and a servant with a God-given purpose. Each image addresses a different dimension of the Christian life. Growth is intentional, not automatic. Community is essential, not optional. Worship is a privilege of access, not a performance. Witness belongs to every believer, not just those in vocational ministry. And suffering, when it comes, is never without meaning for those who follow in the steps of Jesus.
Underneath all six images is a promise that holds everything together. Jesus declared that He will build His church. Not might. Not maybe. Will. That certainty is the foundation on which every disciple stands. The call is clear and the promise is sure. The only question left is whether we are showing up as the living stones He has called us to be, growing, connected, worshiping, witnessing, belonging, and serving with purpose.
