How to Lead with Love
Series: Plugged In: A Practical Guide to Living Connected with God Scripture: 1 Corinthians 13:1–13
First Corinthians 13 is one of the most recognized passages in all of scripture, but its message cuts far deeper than the sentiment printed on greeting cards. Paul opens with a striking warning: no matter how gifted, generous, or spiritually active a person may be, if love is absent, everything amounts to nothing. The church in Corinth had teachers, leaders, spiritual gifts, and active service, yet something essential was missing. They were not loving one another. Paul's point is that love is not one more item on the spiritual checklist. It is the ingredient that gives every other act of faith its meaning and purpose.
Paul goes on to describe what love actually looks like in practice. It is patient, absorbing hurt without retaliation. It is kind, actively extending grace to others. It refuses to envy, boast, or keep a record of wrongs. These qualities are written in the present active tense, meaning love is not a feeling that comes and goes but a consistent way of living. God does not measure spiritual maturity by how much theology a person knows. He measures it by how much Christ has transformed the heart. The searching question Paul raises is worth sitting with: if the people who know you best were asked to describe you, would they use words like patient and kind?
Perhaps the most remarkable part of this chapter is what Paul says about love's permanence. Every spiritual gift has an expiration date, but love belongs not only to this age but to eternity. One day, faith will become sight, and hope will be fully realized. But love has no end. It only grows deeper and fuller forever. And the good news is that this chapter is not simply a list of things to do better. It is a portrait of Jesus Himself. He is patient, kind, not self-seeking, and keeps no record of wrongs. He loved us while we were still running from Him, bore our sin on the cross, and rose again so that broken and selfish people can be reconciled to God. Because He first loved us, we are now empowered to love others in the same way.
