How to Find Your Place

Series: Plugged In: A Practical Guide to Living Connected with God Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12:12–31

Every follower of Jesus belongs to the body of Christ, not as a passive attendee but as an active, irreplaceable member. Drawing from 1 Corinthians 12, the church is described as a living body with many distinct parts, each one placed by God with purpose and intention. Belonging to that body is not something a person earns through spiritual maturity or faithful attendance. It happens at the moment of salvation, when the Holy Spirit unites every believer to Jesus and, through Him, to every other person who belongs to Him. Water baptism and communion are outward pictures of that inward, communal reality.

Two common traps keep people from fully embracing their place in the body. The first is insecurity, the feeling that one's role is too small or too ordinary to matter. The second is pride or independence, the belief that a person can follow Jesus faithfully without genuine connection to other believers. Both traps are addressed directly in Scripture. God does not create unnecessary parts, and no member of the body gets to dismiss another member's contribution as unimportant. The gospel dismantles both insecurity and pride by reminding every believer that everything they have is a gift of grace, chosen and empowered by God Himself.

The goal of the church is unity, not uniformity. God intentionally designed His people to be different from one another, and those differences are meant to work together for the good of the whole body. Spiritual gifts are God-given abilities, empowered by the Holy Spirit, placed in every believer at salvation and meant to be used in community. Most people discover their gifts not through analysis but through action, by showing up, serving, and paying attention to where God stirs their hearts. When the church functions the way God designed it, with every member contributing and every role honored, the world catches a genuine glimpse of Jesus Christ.
