How to Discover Your Design

Series: Plugged In: A Practical Guide to Living Connected with God Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12:1–11

Every Christian has been uniquely equipped by the Holy Spirit, yet many believers either compete over their gifts, ignore them entirely, or never discover what they have been given. Drawing from 1 Corinthians 12:1-11, some of the most important questions about spiritual gifts are addressed, including what they are, who receives them, and how they are meant to be used. A spiritual gift is a God-given ability, empowered by the Holy Spirit, given to every believer at the new birth for the purpose of strengthening Christ's church. Unlike natural talents or skills developed through training, spiritual gifts are specifically granted by the Holy Spirit and are always intended to serve others rather than elevate the person using them.

The order of salvation and service matters deeply. God does not hand out ministry assignments before He gives new life. The Spirit transforms the heart first through the Gospel, and then He gives new purpose. This means that if you have confessed Jesus as Lord, you are already qualified to serve, not because of your own impressiveness, but because the Holy Spirit lives in you. The entire Trinity is involved in equipping the church, and the diversity of gifts is not accidental. It is God's intentional design, much like a toolbox that needs many different tools to accomplish different tasks.

Every gift exists for the common good, meaning it is not meant to stay with the individual but to strengthen others. Burying a gift out of fear or passivity is not faithfulness. God reveals gifts most often while we are using them, not while we are waiting. The practical call is simple: pray with sincerity, take one step of service, and trust that the same Holy Spirit who opened your eyes to believe that Christ is Lord is the same One who equips and empowers you to serve His church.
