How to Tune Your Heart
Series: Plugged In: A Practical Guide to Living Connected with God Scripture: Colossians 3:16–17
Worship is far bigger than a music style or a Sunday morning routine. Colossians 3 presents worship as a lifestyle, a posture of the heart that shapes every word spoken and every action taken throughout the week. Paul calls believers to let the Word of Christ dwell in them richly, to let the peace of Christ rule in their hearts, and to do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus with gratitude. These are not instructions for a church service alone. They are instructions for a life fully surrendered to Christ.
One of the greatest dangers facing Christians today is the tendency to compartmentalize Jesus, giving Him one room in the house of life while keeping the rest for ourselves. But Paul will not allow that kind of divided living. Whatever fills the heart will eventually shape the worship. Like a sponge that releases whatever it has soaked up, we release under pressure whatever we have been treasuring. When Christ's Word is dwelling richly inside us, what flows out is hope, gratitude, and truth. When it is not, fear, complaint, and self-centeredness take its place.
Corporate singing matters deeply because it is one of the primary ways God's people teach and remind one another of who He is and what He has done. Songs carry theology into memory in ways that nothing else quite replicates. But worship does not end when the last song fades. Colossians 3:17 makes clear that every ordinary moment, from answering emails to folding laundry to driving to work, can become an altar of worship when it is offered to Jesus with a grateful heart. The Gospel does not merely forgive misplaced worship. It reorders the heart entirely, recapturing our attention and affection so that our lives begin to revolve around Christ.
