How to Talk to God

Series: Plugged In: A Practical Guide to Living Connected with God Scripture: Matthew 6:5–13

Many Christians believe prayer matters, but far fewer feel satisfied with their prayer life. Life gets loud, schedules fill up, and God slowly gets pushed to the edges of daily life. Jesus addressed this struggle head-on in Matthew 6 by identifying two performance traps that quietly kill genuine prayer. The first is praying to impress other people, turning prayer into a spiritual performance rather than a sincere conversation. The second is praying to impress God, believing that the right words, the right length, or the right emotion will finally get His attention. Jesus dismantles both of these ideas and replaces them with something far simpler and more freeing.

What Jesus offers instead is a pattern for relating to God as a loving Father. The Lord's Prayer moves through six essential themes: establishing the relationship through the word Father, entering into worship by honoring His name, submitting to His kingdom and will, asking for daily provision, bringing honest confession, and seeking His protection from temptation and evil. Each movement is designed not to inform God, but to form us. Prayer changes us before it changes our circumstances, and it keeps our hearts aligned with His.

The invitation to call God Father was not free. It cost Jesus everything. He was rejected at the cross so that we could be welcomed. He experienced abandonment so that we would never have to. Prayer is not how we earn God's love. It is how we enjoy the love that Christ purchased for us. Whether your prayers are long or short, polished or stumbling, they are not graded. They are received by a Father who already knows what you need and simply wants you to come to Him.
