One Thing is Necessary
Preacher: Hayden Barrow Series: Guest Preacher Scripture: Luke 10:38–42
The familiar account of Mary and Martha in Luke 10 offers profound wisdom for anyone struggling to balance service and spiritual growth. When Jesus visited their home, both sisters demonstrated love for Him, but in dramatically different ways. Martha welcomed Jesus with genuine hospitality and worked diligently to serve Him, while Mary chose to sit at His feet and listen to His teaching.
Martha's desire to serve wasn't wrong - in fact, service reflects Christ's own heart, as He came not to be served but to serve. The church needs people willing to arrive early, prepare meals, and handle the countless behind-the-scenes tasks that make ministry possible. However, Martha's approach revealed a deeper issue. Instead of speaking directly to Mary, she complained to Jesus about her sister's lack of help, revealing anxiety and a desire for vindication rather than genuine concern for others.
Jesus' response was both gentle and corrective. He acknowledged Martha's anxiety about many things but emphasized that only one thing is truly necessary - the good portion that Mary had chosen. This necessary thing is hearing and believing God's Word, which endures forever unlike our temporary acts of service. The challenge for believers is maintaining proper balance between serving others and sitting at Jesus' feet. When service becomes anxious rather than joyful, or when we measure our spiritual success by the quantity of our work rather than the quality of our relationship with Christ, we need to step back and prioritize time with Him. True service flows from hearts that are regularly filled through God's Word.
