Who Am I?

Preacher: Bob Jolly Series: Guest Preacher Scripture: Luke 10:25–37

The familiar parable of the Good Samaritan from Luke 10:25-37 presents a radical challenge to our understanding of biblical hospitality. When a lawyer asks Jesus who qualifies as his neighbor, he's really searching for loopholes—wanting to know how small he can draw the circle of responsibility while still feeling good about himself. We often approach God's commands the same way, asking how little we can do rather than how we can love more like Jesus.

The story features five key characters, each representing different approaches to human need. The priest and Levite, despite their religious positions, choose safety and distance when they encounter a beaten man on the dangerous Jericho road. They represent hospitality blocked by image, busyness, and professional concerns. The innkeeper provides service but sacrifices nothing personal—representing outsourced, sanitized care that costs him nothing. In contrast, the Samaritan—a member of a despised group—demonstrates true costly compassion by moving toward the victim, risking his own safety, and investing his time, money, and resources.

Before we can practice this kind of hospitality, we must recognize ourselves as the rescued victims. Jesus is the ultimate Good Samaritan who found us spiritually dead and carried us to safety through His sacrifice. This parable calls us to take chances on difficult people, pay the cost of genuine care, and involve our community in the work of restoration. True biblical hospitality moves us toward people rather than away from them, requiring us to invest our evenings, weekends, budget, and emotional margin in others who may never repay us.
