Hospitality in a Hostile World

Series: Enduring Love, Certain Hope Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 2:13–16

Our culture has descended into hostile tribalism where differences become existential threats and people are reduced to opposing camps rather than seen as image bearers of God. Families fracture over politics, friendships end over social media posts, and surveys show 8 in 10 Americans view opposing political parties as fundamentally untrustworthy. This division extends beyond politics into every area of life, defining our identity by who we're against rather than who we're for.

Biblical hospitality provides a radical response to this hostility by refusing to fall into the trap of reducing people to labels. The Thessalonian church demonstrates this beautifully—they were both the most hospitable and most persecuted church in the New Testament. Their hospitality remained resilient because it was anchored in God's Word working actively in their lives, not merely in cultural norms or social conventions. They welcomed God's Word like honored company, recognized its authority above competing philosophies, and understood it was actively transforming them.

This word-driven hospitality produces both fruit and friction. When we live open lives in a self-absorbed world, we become misfits whose choices swim upstream against culture. The key to sustaining hospitality amid hostility is releasing our position on the judge's bench and trusting God with outcomes. Jesus exemplified this by sharing communion with Judas, showing that gospel hospitality means welcoming others without controlling results. We're called to be known not for what we're against, but who we're for—choosing tables over trenches and grace over tribalism.
