The Weight of Hospitality
Series: Enduring Love, Certain Hope Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 2:9
Biblical hospitality goes far deeper than creating Instagram-worthy moments or hosting impressive dinner parties. It's fundamentally about welcoming strangers and sharing not just the content of the Gospel, but the closeness of our lives with others. This kind of authentic welcome begins with a heart transformation - open doors stem from an open heart, and when we struggle to open our lives to others, it often reveals something deeper about our spiritual condition. The reality is that true hospitality always costs us something significant. It requires our time when we'd rather focus on ourselves, our comfort and predictability, our energy when we're already exhausted, our money from tight budgets, and control over our carefully planned schedules. Many Christians aren't resisting hospitality because they're selfish or disobedient - they're simply busy and tired, protecting what little margin they have left in their overwhelmed lives. The key to joyful hospitality lies in understanding our motivation. Religion tells us we must work so God will give us something in return, but the Gospel declares that Jesus has already done everything for us, therefore we are free to give. When grace fills us up completely, it naturally spills over into our schedules and onto our tables. Hospitality becomes not a burden we carry to earn spiritual points, but an overflow of what God has done and continues to do in our lives. This transforms our approach from obligation to joyful sacrifice, making our homes and hearts available for the sake of the Gospel.
