The Basics of Gospel Growth
Series: Enduring Love, Certain Hope Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 1:1–10
Many churches today focus on attendance numbers, budgets, and programs when measuring growth; but the New Testament challenges us to ask a deeper question: Is the gospel actually taking root and bearing fruit in people's lives? Despite knowing all the right vocabulary about discipleship and spiritual growth, many Christians feel stuck or discouraged by their seemingly slow progress. Paul's letter to the Thessalonians provides a different model for understanding gospel growth. Writing to a young, pressured church facing opposition in an idol-saturated city, Paul identifies three clear evidences of gospel growth: work of faith, labor of love, and steadfastness of hope. Faith in the New Testament is never passive—it shows up in obedience and costs us something. Gospel love isn't sentimental but moves toward others sacrificially, even when it's exhausting. Hope isn't mere optimism but endurance rooted in Christ's promised return, giving strength to persevere through suffering rather than removing it. This growth doesn't depend on perfect sermons or flawless strategies but on God's gracious initiative and the Spirit's power. The Thessalonians became imitators of Paul and the Lord, eventually becoming examples for others to follow. This creates spiritual multiplication—a simple, repeatable process where faithful believers point others to Jesus through their ordinary obedience. True discipleship requires proximity, not perfection, and happens when people have a front row seat to authentic faith in action.
