What are You Looking For?
Preacher: Rick Biesiadecki Series: Guest Preacher Scripture: Psalm 34:1–22
We all have an innate desire for happiness, hope, and fulfillment, yet the uncertainty of life often leaves us anxious and searching. Harvard's extensive research on happiness concluded that relationships are key to contentment. However, people typically pursue fulfillment through four main channels: wealth, power, pleasure, and honor/fame. These paths often become idols – empty things that promise satisfaction but never deliver. In Psalm 34, King David shares his testimony after a near-death experience. At the heart of his carefully structured message is the invitation to 'taste and see that the Lord is good.' This sensory language emphasizes that our relationship with God should engage our whole being. David provides practical steps for finding true fulfillment: keeping our tongues from evil, turning away from evil to do good, and both seeking and pursuing peace. The distinction between seeking (heart orientation) and pursuing (deliberate action) is crucial – we need both to experience God fully. When we prioritize God, we discover He is near to the brokenhearted, saves the crushed in spirit, and redeems those who take refuge in Him. The challenge is to lay aside empty idols and turn wholeheartedly to God, experiencing Him as the only true source of the happiness, fulfillment, and safety we desire.
