Mark's Gospel concludes with an unexpected ending that leaves readers with questions, wonder, and hope. When Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome visit Jesus' tomb to anoint his body, they discover the stone rolled away and an angel announcing that Jesus has risen. Rather than depicting joyful reunions with the risen Christ, Mark ends with the women fleeing in fear and saying nothing to anyone—an abrupt conclusion that scholars believe was intentional. This ending highlights how the disciples were stunned by the resurrection despite Jesus predicting it multiple times, and it confronts readers with important questions about our own response. Do we allow doubt and fear to prevent us from embracing resurrection promises like freedom from condemnation and new life in Christ? Do we receive the assurance and hope offered through the empty tomb? The angel specifically mentioned Peter by name, showing that no one is beyond forgiveness and restoration. Finally, are we responding to the mission connected to the resurrection? Jesus promised to meet his disciples in Galilee—the place of their original calling—suggesting a recommissioning with greater resurrection hope. The beauty of Mark's ending is that it reminds us God's story is still being written, and we're invited to participate in what happens next.
