Truly, the Son of God

Series: The Gospel of Mark Scripture: Mark 15:21–47

The crucifixion of Jesus Christ, detailed in Mark 15:21-47, is a cornerstone of Christian faith that many have become too familiar with. This familiarity risks reducing the cross to a mere symbol rather than recognizing it as the pivotal moment in human history. The passage shows Jesus refusing pain-dulling wine, being stripped of dignity, and enduring mockery as he was nailed to the cross with the ironic inscription 'King of the Jews' above him.Though appearing to be a victim of injustice, Jesus was actually executing a divine rescue plan. As the creator and sustainer of all things, he willingly endured the cross while the crowd mocked his power, authority, and purpose. At his death, darkness covered the land, and Jesus cried out about being forsaken - experiencing our judgment day so we wouldn't have to. The temple curtain tore from top to bottom, signifying free access to God. Unlikely witnesses to these events included several women, Joseph of Arimathea (a council member), and a Roman centurion who declared Jesus to be the Son of God. Through his death and burial, Jesus demonstrated that sin carries a death penalty but has been defeated through his sacrifice. The payment was made in full, and Sunday - the resurrection - was coming.
