Poured Out For Many
Preacher: Josh Stringer Series: The Gospel of Mark Scripture: Mark 14:12–25
Mark 14:12-25 reveals Jesus' remarkable sovereignty during the most chaotic 24 hours in human history. When His disciples ask where to prepare the Passover meal, Jesus gives seemingly impossible instructions - find a man carrying a water jar in Jerusalem's crowded streets and follow him to secure a guest room. The disciples obey without question and find everything exactly as Jesus described, demonstrating His divine control over every detail even as events leading to His crucifixion unfold. During the meal, Jesus announces that one of them will betray Him, prompting each disciple to ask, 'Is it I?' This moment highlights both divine sovereignty and human responsibility - Jesus' death was ordained by God, yet Judas remains fully accountable for his betrayal. Jesus then transforms the traditional Passover into something new, taking bread and wine to represent His body and blood. Despite knowing His disciples would soon abandon Him, Jesus invites these imperfect followers to participate in His sacrifice, establishing a new covenant meal that awaits final fulfillment in God's kingdom. This passage challenges us to follow Jesus even when His instructions seem unclear, to honestly examine our hearts, and to fully participate in what Jesus offers. Even in our most chaotic circumstances, we can trust that Jesus remains in complete control, knowing us fully yet loving us completely.
