Jesus Walks on Water
January 5, 2025 Preacher: Josh Stringer Series: The Gospel of Mark
Scripture: Mark 6:45–56
The account of Jesus walking on water showcases a profound intersection of divine power and pastoral care. After the miraculous feeding of the 5,000, Jesus intentionally sent His disciples into what would become a challenging situation on the sea, while He withdrew to spend focused time in prayer. When the disciples found themselves struggling against strong winds, Jesus demonstrated His supernatural authority by walking on water to reach them. Initially terrified, the disciples struggled to recognize Him, revealing how even those closest to Jesus can sometimes fail to perceive His presence and work in their lives. Their hardened hearts prevented them from fully comprehending His divine nature, despite having witnessed the earlier miracle of the loaves and fishes. This powerful encounter teaches us that following God's direction doesn't guarantee smooth sailing, but it does ensure His presence and care during our struggles. Jesus's response to their fear - seeing their distress, speaking words of comfort, and coming alongside them - establishes a pattern for how He continues to work in our lives today. His declaration 'It is I' connected His identity to God's divine name revealed to Moses, affirming His authority over nature and His power to calm our deepest fears.
