The [Extra]Ordinary Parts of Christmas
Series: Joy to the World (Advent 2024) Scripture: Matthew 1:18–25
As we approach Christmas, Matthew 1:18-25 offers fresh insights into the birth of Jesus, revealing extraordinary glory through ordinary events and people. The birth of Jesus was surrounded by scandal, with Mary found to be with child before her marriage to Joseph. Joseph, a just man, faced a dilemma but chose compassion and resolved to divorce her quietly. The Holy Spirit's role in Jesus' conception descandalized the situation, bringing about the miraculous birth of the Savior. Joseph's obedience to God's command ensured Jesus' recognition as the Son of David, fulfilling prophecies and paving the way for salvation. This passage teaches us to seek God in difficult circumstances, recognize the Holy Spirit's work, and embrace obedience and faithfulness, showing how God uses ordinary people for extraordinary purposes.
